The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a U.S. space based radio navigation system that offers a reliable, navigation and timing services for civilian users on a continuous worldwide basis - available to all.
For anyone with a GPS receiver, the system will provide the location and time. GPS provides the exact location and time information for an unlimited number of people at all times, day and night, anywhere in the world.
The GPS consists of three parts: satellites orbiting the earth, control and monitoring stations on Earth, and GPS receivers owned by users. Satellites GPS signals transmitted from space to be found and identified by GPS receivers. Each GPS receiver then provides the three-dimensional location (latitude, longitude and altitude) plus time.
Individuals may purchase GPS handsets that are available through commercial distributors. Equipped with these receptors GPS, users can pinpoint where they are and easily navigate to where they want to go, whether walking, driving, traveling by plane or boat. GPS has become a mainstay of transportation systems worldwide, providing navigation for aviation, ground and maritime operations.
Disaster Relief and emergency services depend upon GPS for location and timing capabilities in their life-saving missions. Everyday activities such as banking, telephone operations mobile, and even the control of power grids, are facilitated by the accurate timing provided by GPS. Farmers, surveyors, geologists and many others do their work more efficiently, safely, economically, and accurately using the free and open GPS signals.
Three separate parts comprise the Global Positioning System. The first segment of the system consists of 24 satellites in orbit 20,000 kilometers above the Earth in 12-hour circular orbits. This means that each satellite has 12 hours to make a complete circle around the Earth. In order to ensure that it can be detected from any point on the surface Earth, the satellites are divided into six groups of four. Each group is assigned a different way forward. This creates six orbital planes which completely surround the Earth.
These satellites send radio signals to Earth that contain information on the satellite. Land use GPS-based receivers, these signals can be detected and used to determine the positions of the receptors (latitude, longitude, altitude). Radio signals are sent to two different L-band frequencies. L Band refers to a range of frequencies between 390 MHz and 1550. Within each signal, it sends a coded sequence. By comparing the received sequence with the original sequence, the Scientists can determine how long it takes for the signal to reach the Earth from the satellite.
The time delay is useful in learning of the ionosphere and troposphere, two layers of the atmosphere surrounding the Earth. A third signal is also sent to the satellite receivers. This signal contains data on health and the satellite position.
The second part of the GPS ground station is composed of a receiver and antenna, and as communication tools to transmit data to the data center. The omni-directional antenna at each site, acting much like a radio antenna on the car, take the satellite signals and transmits them to host the site as electric currents. The receiver then separates the signals on different channels of a satellite designated in particular, and the frequency at a given time. Once the signals have been isolated, the receiver can decode and divide them into different frequencies.
With this information the receiver produces a general position (latitude, longitude and height) to the antenna. Later, the data collected by the receiver can be processed again by scientists to determine several things, including another set of position coordinates of the same antenna, this time with pinpoint accuracy.
The third system is the data center. The role of the data center is two times. Thus monitoring and controlling of global GPS stations, and uses automated computer systems to retrieve and analyze data of the receptors in those places.
After processing the data, along with the original raw data, will be made available to Scientists around the world for use in a variety of applications. From global GPS sites are built and controlled by different institutions worldwide, many data places in the heart.
